Whitworth Road featured in Irish Times Home & Design

Our Whitworth Road project was featured in the Home & Design section of The Irish Times.

The project involves the renovation of a period home in Drumcondra, Dublin 9. This corner property has two public façades, with the main entrance centrally located on the side elevation. Prior to the intervention, both the house and site had undergone a series of alterations and extensions as part of its former use as a bed and breakfast.

The design approach focused on stripping the building back to its original plan form in order to enhance the inherent quality and character of the existing spaces. Central to the brief was the creation of a private sanctuary for the clients, achieved through a careful reorganisation of internal spaces and the introduction of a series of thresholds, both internally and externally.

Materials used throughout the project include timber, brick, and concrete. Shuttered formwork concrete was employed at the junction between the new extension and the original house, as well as to form planters and benches within the courtyard. Power-floated concrete panels, separated by pebble-filled channels, were used to define the newly integrated walled courtyard space, strengthening the relationship between interior and exterior.

The project was Selected for Exhibition at the 2018 RIAI Awards and was featured in the Home & Design section of The Irish Times.

We are very grateful to The Irish Times for featuring the project and for the opportunity to share Whitworth Road with their readers.
