Our Strand Road project was featured in RIAI House + Design Magazine.
The project involves the extension and renovation of a house in Sutton, Dublin 13, created behind a retained 18th-century stone façade. The historic structure provides a strong anchor to the site, with new interventions carefully designed to establish continuity between old and new.
The long, narrow, and irregularly shaped site, combined with its east–west orientation, informed a snaking plan form that moves through the house and terminates in a garden room. The layout incorporates two courtyards and an open front-to-back kitchen and living space, creating a sequence of interconnected internal and external spaces.
A glazed gallery overlooking the main living areas serves the first-floor bedrooms, reinforcing visual connections throughout the house. Salvaged brick and stone from the original structure were reused within the new construction, strengthening the relationship between the contemporary architecture and the history of the site.
The project was Selected for Exhibition at the 2018 RIAI Awards and was included in the Irish Architecture Foundation’s Open House Dublin programme in 2017.
We are very grateful to RIAI House + Design Magazine for featuring Strand Road and for the opportunity to share the project with their readers.
