Our Lerrig Lodge project was featured in The Sunday Independent.
Lerrig Lodge is a period home renovation and extension located adjacent to Malahide Village, Co. Dublin. Dating from 1912, the original house is set within mature private gardens and framed by large trees. The project involved refurbishing and reorganising the existing fabric, supplementing it with additional spaces and strengthening the connection between internal and external areas to create a contemporary family home.
New extensions were carefully aligned with the spine wall of the original house. Two concrete ring-beams at differing levels emerge from the rear elevation, folding away from one another to frame two distinct elements: a two-storey volume housing ancillary accommodation with a timber-clad bedroom above, and a single-storey element containing the main family spaces for cooking, dining, and living.
Material continuity was central to the design approach. Accoya timber was used for all glazing elements in both the original and new areas, as well as for cladding the bedroom volume. The concrete of the ring-beams is repeated internally as polished concrete floors and benches, and externally as power-floated concrete landscaped surfaces. Pale brick forms the external walls of the new extensions and is left exposed internally, allowing the movement of light and shadow from the surrounding trees to animate the spaces throughout the day.
The project was featured in The Sunday Independent, Plan Magazine, and Irish Country Magazine, and was voted Most Liked Extension of 2019 on InspiringMe.ie.
We are very grateful to The Sunday Independent for featuring Lerrig Lodge and for the opportunity to share the project with their readers.
